A diverse group of companies and standards organizations on Tuesday announced the formation of a new group to oversee the development of the metaverse. The news was positive for numerous metaversion actions.
The Metaverse Standards Forum, hosted by the Khronos Group, hopes to establish interoperability standards for the envisaged metaverse. Metaverse is a future version of the Internet with impressive three-dimensional virtual worlds that replace static two-dimensional web pages.
The metaverse includes a range of technologies in the field of collaborative spatial computing. These technologies include interactive 3D graphics, augmented and virtual reality, digital twins, online economy, multiplayer games and more.
Industry leaders believe that the potential of the metaverse will not be realized unless it is built on open standards. The forum plans to start in July.
Metaverse actions presented in the new group
Companies considered to be metaverse actions that have joined the new group include Facebook Parent Meta Platforms (TARGET), Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia (NVDA) i Unity Software (U).
Other companies on the board as founders include Adobe (ADBE), Alibaba (GRANDMA), Autodesk (ADSK), Epic Games, Ikea, Qualcomm (KCOM), Soni (SONI) i Vaifair (V).
“The metaverse will bring together different technologies, which require the constellation of interoperability standards, which have been created and maintained by many standardization organizations,” Khron President Neil Trevet said in a press release. Trevet is also vice president of ecosystems for developers in Nvidia.
He added: “The Metaverse Standards Forum is a unique place for coordination between standardization organizations and industry, with a mission to encourage pragmatic and timely standardization that will be essential for an open and inclusive metaverse.”
A significant company is missing from the group
One significant company that is usually on the list of metaverse actions, Roblock (RBLKS), is not among the first members of the group.
On the stock market today, metaverse stocks have risen on news including Microsoft, Nvidia and Unity. However, shares of Meta fell despite the rise in technology stocks on Tuesday.
