Pirates to recall Oneil Cruz, choose Blay Madris

Pirates will call Oneil Cruz to join a major league team, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. Pirates manager Derek Shelton confirmed Cruz’s promotion to reporters, including Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazetteand added that outside player Bligh Madris he will also join the team. The corresponding moves are not known yet. Cruz is on the list of 40 people, but Madrid is not.

From tomorrow, June 20, MLB teams will have to adhere to a limit of 13 pitchers on their active list of 26 players, after they were previously allowed to carry 14. As many teams push their throwing sticks to the limit, it is likely to be a series of upcoming transactions where the pitcher is removed from the list to make room for the player in position. However, it is possible that this will be the most significant of these transactions, given Cruz’s potential customer status and unusual profile.

Originally signed by Dodgers of the Dominican Republic, it was changed to Pirates 2017 as part of a deadline agreement sent by Tony Watson Another way. Since then, Cruz has attracted attention both because of his incredible stick skills and because, at 6’7 ″, he is unusually tall for a short stop.

Last year, Cruz completely dominated the lower leagues. In 68 games between Double-A and Triple-A, he hit 17 home runs, stole 19 bases and cut .310 / .375 / .594, for vRC + of 158. Based on that great result, he was promoted to the major leagues in October last year, winning a cameo of two games after the end of the season. Cruz scored his first home run in the major leagues in one of his nine appearances on the board last year.

Entering this season, many expected Cruz to be on Pittsburgh’s opening list, but chose him in late March, seemingly motivated by consideration of service time. By keeping him on the farm for a few weeks, they could prevent Cruz from reaching a full year of MLB service by the end of the 2022 season, postponing his free agency for a year. Cruz then slowly entered the furrow at the beginning of the season, hitting .176 / .282 / .284 in April. Based on that sluggish effect, Cruz remained on the farm when the Pirates set up regular breaks Kevin Newman on the injured list in late April. Since then, most of the short time for the game has gone on Diego Castillo, which reaches .195 / .238 / .308 years. Meanwhile, Cruz’s bat woke up from that dormant start, as he hit .256 / .368 / .500 in May, followed by .283 / .364 / .500 in June. The club tried with Cruz in the left field, which gave him nine starts there this year, but he made 42 starts in a short time. It seems likely that the 23-year-old will get a chance to stay on the field, at least until the team is in a competitive period.

Of course, when the team enters the competition window, it will be largely reduced to exciting young people. The Pirates have never been a high-paying team and will depend on Cruz, Ke’Brian Haies, Roansi Contreras and others to use their potential while they are younger and cheaper to build a competitive club.

As for Madris, 26, he doesn’t come with as much excitement as Cruz, but there are still reasons for Pittsburgh fans to be excited, based on his excellent performance this year. Peak from the ninth round of the 2017 draft, the outfielder has never appeared on one of the lists of the best potential players in the American Baseball system, although he received an honorable mention on the FanGraps list coming this season. In 45 Triple-A games this year, the left-hander walked in 11.3% of his board appearances and reduced his bounce rate to 20.3%. Overall, his hitting line is .308 / .390 / .526 for vRC + of 144. His .374 BABIP could bring good luck in those numbers, but it is still an impressive result for an outside player from the corner. Madris will probably fight Jack Suvinski i Cal Mitchell while playing a corner in the field. Suvinski may have earned himself a longer look at one corner after today’s three, but Mitchell scored only .205 / .244 / .356 in the first few weeks at the Grand League level.
