The Pittsburgh Pirates invite the best potential player Oneil Cruz, according to several reports (Jon Heiman). Cruz appeared in two games at the end of last season and was thought to be ready to join the MLB ranks this season, but the Pirates sent him to Triple-A to start the season and he stayed there until this promotion.

Entering the season, RJ Anderson of CBS Sports ranked Cruz as the 22nd best potential baseball playerand many of the guys in front of him have already debuted this year.

Cruz, 23, is a pretty athletic specimen. He is 6 feet-7 short. Keep in mind that Corey Seager is regularly announced as the highest show stop in the history of MLB and is 6 feet tall. Cruz also has great strength and speed. To underline that point, last season in 69 games in the small league he had 16 doubles, five triples, 17 hosts and 19 stolen balls. Through 54 games on Sunday in Triple-A, Cruz scored .233 / .337 / .424 with seven doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 35 RBI, 40 runs and 11 stolen bases.

Here’s a good look at Cruz’s ability:

Taking the ball so low and hitting it just by throwing your hands through the zone is incredibly impressive and there just aren’t many players talented enough to do it.

It didn’t take Cruz long to influence his debut last season. He won 2 for 5 in his first game, and then scored in his next game, the last of the season for Pirates.

The Pirates experimented with Cruz in the left field, but he still mostly played shortstop. Expect him to immediately start playing there every day for the club from the big league, since they were among the worst teams in the league this season.
